ITWomen 2022 Girls’ Summer Robotics Camp
ITWomen’s 2022 summer tech camp introduced girls to robotics and a presentation from female software engineers working in surgical robotics. The campers also heard from tech industry professionals on careers in cybersecurity.
The camp was led by Applied Engineering & Robotics Technical Education Teacher Shawn Waring, of South Dade Senior High.
The free week-long camp that ended Friday June 24 was made possible by a grant from Akamai.
ITWomen president Claire Marrero says, “The camp experience provides a valuable connection to a community of other girls and future STEM leaders. Our goal is to inspire more girls to pursue careers in technology and engineering fields through fun and interactive experiences.”
ITWomen holds a free summer tech camp for middle and high school-age girls annually. This year’s camp was held onsite at South Dade High School in Homestead, Florida.
Medtronic software engineers Sonali Mahendran and Katy Riojas opened the world of surgical robotics to the campers, showing applications, safety considerations, design, and how to get involved in the field.
The camp wrapped up with a talk on future careers in cyber security from Jen Arbelaez and Teresa Colon of Akamai Technologies.
